Dear friends,
It is with great joy that we can announce that Ted has been discharged from hospital and is on the road to a full recovery. The surgery went well, and the excellent medical team helping him are very pleased with his progress. He has been nothing short of heroic in how he has handled the whole ordeal, and now it has been medically proved that he does indeed have a brain.

Today, however, also marks the end of our Summer Stampede Tour. We were hoping to have made it out by Bonnaroo this weekend. But it is with sadness that we have to announce the cancellation of our scheduled performances at both Bonnaroo and Telluride Festivals, and a postponement of our show at Cricket Wireless Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS. If we could've we would've, you know that about us. We trust that you can respect our collective desire to encourage Ted to make a full recovery, and that this is based purely on the medical advice we have received.

On behalf of Ted, and all of us really, we would like to thank every one for their compassion and support at this time and we are very excited to get back out on tour as soon as we can.

Ted, Ben, Marcus and Win

Captiol Federal Park Makes the Planet Rock

Blog contributor: Joe Barvick, Intern

Hot 103 Jamz’ second annual Summer Jam was a fitting heir to last year’s successful inaugural show. Featuring newer artists, Block Life, a rising homegrown duo, in addition to established stars Rick Ross and Soulja Boy, Summer Jam II brought a first class show to Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone on Saturday, June 13.

Speaking of stars and homegrown artists, the day’s festivities officially began with just such a rapper, Kansas City’s own, Tech N9ne. Select members of Tech N9ne’s fan club received special access into the venue at 3:00pm, for an opportunity to meet the star himself. This incredible opportunity was followed by the opening of the VIP club at 4:00pm. Fans with a VIP Experience pass gained early access to the venue, in addition to drink specials and private restrooms. Regular doors opened at 4:30, and the stage was set for a great evening of music.

The show kicked off to a great start thanks to Murs, a talented rapper who has toured with Tech N9ne. Murs pumped the crowed, and the excitement only continued to grow throughout the evening. A star-studded line up followed the opening performance. Black Walt took the stage next and was succeeded by Block Life, Plies, Dorrough, and Yung L.A consecutively.

An already great evening only became better when Rick Ross took the stage. He was followed by the KC King, Tech N9ne. Throughout the course of his one hour set, Tech N9ne demonstrated why he is the best selling independent rapper in the world. His performance, which, in addition to great songs, included outstanding choreography and an awesome light show; it was truly first rate. Though Tech N9ne set the bar very high indeed, he was followed by a worthy successor, Hurricane Chris. After Hurricane’s upbeat set, it was time for the evening’s headliner, Soulja Boy. Throughout his hour set, Soulja Boy wowed the crowed, providing a great ending to great day.

As always the cleaning crew and recycling team were working hard behind the scenes to maintain the venue and implement Cap Fed Park’s green initiatives. They did excellent job seeing everyone had a great time at Summer Jam II, including Mother Nature.

To conclude, Summer Jam II brought a great day of music to Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone. If next year’s Summer Jam is anything like this one (which I certainly believe it will be) it will truly be a can’t miss event.

DARE Festival 2009

Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone hosted the annual DARE Festival on May 14, 2009. Celebrating the accomplishments of 3000 students, the house was rocking with enthusiasm. Students from two states, 50 plus schools and 10 counties filled the amphitheater to enjoy music, bands and entertaining speakers.

Starting the festival with the Pledge of Allegiance, students stood proud as they placed their hand across their heart. Visiting speakers included several local police officials and state officials congratulating the students on their success in completing the DARE program. Retro Bill however was the star of the show. With his wacky looks and entertaining style, Retro Bill kept the kids attention throughout the day, introducing other performers and reminding the kids how important it is to say no to drugs and alcohol.

Supporting local talent, several police officials formed a cover band and had the kids off their feet rushing to the stage. The young band Clever by Accident also performed and became local celebrities in 15 minutes, signing autographs for a long time after their set. Also joining the list was country performer Christy Crook, dancing group Power and Life, Disney's Jordan Pruitt and rapper Alan Bradley. Every artist brought something to the days success; words of wisdom, talented lyrics and energy.

All students were very helpful in placing trash in its respective places and also helped the staff of Cap Fed Park continue our green initiatives and chose to place their plastic bottles and soda cans in the recycle bin instead of the trash can. When I asked one Bonner Springs student if he was having fun, he told me this was the best day ever. We hope the students will join us again next year for another successful DARE Festival.

Cap Fed Park Hosts Killer Season Opener

Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone's opening show was a success. The Killers and Wild Light were a perfect match for the perfect weather. With hundreds of calls pouring in all week regarding weather policies, the fans were prepared for the worst weather conditions. However that did not stop some die hard fan from lining up at 7:30 am for a 7:30 pm show.

The VIP club opened an hour early allowing fans with a VIP Experience pass to enter the facility early to enjoy drinks and DJ Kirby from Mix 93.3 before the show. Waiting at the entrance to the facility from the VIP club, these fans were ready to get their up front view of The Killers frontman, Brandon Flowers.

Opening band, Wild light set the tone for a wonderful night. No lightening needed to brighten up Cap Fed Park's stage, The Killers production left many in amazement. With their Vegas style flare, The Killers kicked off the show with their hit Human and continued to rock out hits that everyone came to hear.

Some fans however did not want to be in the lower section and expressed their disappointment in the closed lawn seating. Due to The Killers request Cap Fed Park @ Sandstone restricted access to the lawn, but allowed all fans to enjoy the upper seats at their leisure. What is typically sold as a reserved seat, was open as general admission. Several fans opted to upgrade to a box seat for the show for a more private experience with wait staff.

Behind the scenes our cleaning crew worked hard to keep the facility clean, our recycling team worked hard sorting trash and everyone worked hard to maintain our green initiatives that we strive so hard to maintain. Throughout the parking lot as well as the venue, fans respected our initiatives and placed their empty beer cans and plastic bottles in our recycle containers.

Right before The Killers took the stage one fan said to me, "I'm so glad Sandstone is back." We were honored to kick off the second season as Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone with The Killers. It was a success and we are ready for the remaining shows in the 2009 season.

Cap Fed Park's season opener received Kansas City Star's, Tim Finn's seal of approval in his review in Back to Rockville, "Sandstone christened its 2009 season with a bright, seismic blast. (The Killers) are loved by music fans who appreciate good rock anthems and who like to have a great time hearing them live."

Capitol Federal Park Hosts Dreamy Concert

With a lineup that included tributes to The Doors, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd, not even the might of Mother Nature could rip fans away from their Rock and Roll Dreams on Saturday, July 26.

The evening began unassumingly enough with mere ominous cloud cover, but the weather, and the rock, escalated rapidly.

Mojo Risin', Houses of the Holy and Satisfaction managed to fight through downpours, thunder and lightning with the kind of bravery that kept fans walking into the venue despite what most might consider unpleasant conditions.

By the time Think Floyd USA took the stage, fans were soaking but eager to continue a night of their favorite songs.

A stage covered in plastic met the heavy rains head-on and Think Floyd ended the night strong.

Fans left soaked by rain, but at least it wasn't sweat like at a normal show, right?

Utter Mayhem!

phot by Paul Chokota

Slipknot, Missouri's neighbor's to the north (is there another band from Iowa?) finalized a day of metal for a crowd of thousands on Tuesday, July 22.

The Mayhem Tour starred Slipknot, Disturbed, Dragonforce, and a multitude of other acts on three separate stages.

Fans were privy to several flavors of heavy music, including black metal, death metal, metalcore, nu metal, melodic metal as well as original recipe.

Though a few rain drops fell throughout the end of the show, it wasn't enough to effect Slipknot's mighty pyrotechnic display or the spirits of fans. After all, it had been more than two years since the 'Knot had paid the metro a visit.

The Kansas City Star's review of Mayhem can be read here.

O.A.R. Jams Capitol Federal Park

On Sunday, July 20's mild temperatures set the stage for a mellow night of melodic music with Steel Train and headliners O.A.R.

O.A.R. brought its signature brand of upbeat alt rock complete with jam sessions and acoustic guitar serenades.

Openers Steel Train gave listeners a harmonious musical meal to chew on, with a sound evoking Simon and Garfunkel, but retaining a modern edge.

Fans left full of happiness…and probably some of the venue's $5 beverages.

311 and Snoop Dogg Get Cap Fed Park Moving

Omaha's 311, hip hop icon and fellow "green" advocate Snoop Dogg and opener Fiction Plane came, saw and musically conquered Capitol Federal Park's largest and most excited crowd of the summer.

Despite a potential disparity between which fans would stay for which performers, the massive fan assembly seemed poised for equal portions of Snoop and 311 (with Fiction Plane added for good measure).

Not only did the night house top-notch performers and a bevy of attendants, it was also the first concert in recent memory not plagued by pre-show or post-show downpours.

Hinder and Staind Dry Off a Damp Crowd

After a rain-laden soundcheck and about half an hour of sprinkles, last night's show headlined by Hinder and Staind was met with the enthusiasm of fans who wouldn't let being soggy stop a good time.

Opening acts Jet Black Stare and Alterbridge got the crowd warmed up while visitors took a look at the venue's new seating arrangements and sipped (or chugged) Capitol Federal Park's $5 beers.

Among the tents of vendors, many attendees were surprised and excited to receive free concert tickets to upcoming Cap Fed Park shows, including The Rock and Roll Dream Concert and the Benefit for Greensburg.

The mild night of heavy rock ended with dry fans and and smooth traffic.

Capitol Federal Park Gets Warped!

It was a hot, humid day framed by heavy showers, but it was filled with enough enthusiasm to make none of that matter.

This year's Vans Warped Tour sported some of the biggest names of the summer in a diverse rock lineup that ranged from the pop of Paramore to the metal riffs of August Burns Red.

Though the challenges of maintaining green practices during an event as large in scope and scale as the Warped Tour are demanding, with the help of staff and concert goers, the day ended as a success.

Read The Pitch's take on the day here.

The Star's Timothy Finn had this to say about his time at Warped.

To sum it up, fans turned out by the thousands to see their favorite acts throughout a scorching day and faced the downpour that brought the show to a dramatic close.

Mix 93.3’s Red, White and Boom Sizzles

Saturday saw thousands of music fans from across the metro filing in to share in the excitement of Mix 93.3's 13th annual Red, White and Boom summer music event.

Fair weather helped the predominantly young crowd enjoy a diverse pop and rock lineup, headlined by 2007 American Idol winner Jordin Sparks.

Emceed by Mix's radio personality Swank, the day of music included an expert Guitar Hero III performance.

The crowd proved receptive to Capitol Federal Park's green initiative by properly sorting their recyclables and taking all of the supplied "green" buttons from Kansas City's environmental group Bridging the Gap. The buttons include information on how individuals can take steps to a more sustainable future, reminding those who wear them to participate in bettering tomorrow through social responsibility.

The Kansas City Star's Timothy Finn was at the concert and shares his synopsis here.

John Kreicberg of The Pitch shares his take on the show here.
